Solamînt els Fätsilors: a Timeline of Talossan History 1990-2000

NOTE: Dates are given in the Gregorian calendar (numerals), the year of Talossa (miniscule Roman) and the year of the Republic (majuscule Roman).

1990/xi February: Voters give Peculiar Way absolute majority, although rejecting Peculiarist policies in simultaneous referendum. Lorentz resigns as Prime Minister after six days in office, handing over to "notorious do-nothing" Harry Wozniak.

Talossa is still reeling from the vituperativeness of the Schneider era, with many Talossans quitting citizenship or drifting into apathy. Wozniak's Peculiarist government becomes notorious for inactivity.

Ián Metáirâ comes out as gay, begins renouncing fascistic past (although continues to be staunchly conservative).

May: Wozniak government dismissed on vote of confidence in the Cosâ. Two different PCs (run by Madison and Davron) contest subsequent election. Madison's PC wins absolute majority in face of Leftist mass abstention. Erni becomes Prime Minister again, continues Wozniakian apathy. Many citizens now believe that "Talossa is dead".

December: A "National Destiny Referendum" gives Talossans choice of dissolving the nation, returning to royal dictatorship or the status quo. Status quo wins huge majority, albeit on small (13 voters) turnout.

1991/xii February: Ian Metáirâ joins PC, runs as candidate for Prime Minister against Buffone's Un-named Party. PC wins narrow victory - Metáirâ takes oath of office on Hitler's birthday "as an in-your-face to the spooked Leftists".

November: Left refuses to stand in Cosâ election in protest against royal "disruptive influence" and PC-inspired constitutional reforms. However, Leftists vote for variety of splinter parties via "write-in" votes.

1992/xiii January: election ends in 50/50 tie - Metáirâ remains in office. Davron each given one PC seat. Davron engage in homophobic attacks on Metáirâ in their newspaper, "The Integrity".

March: Murphy and Lorentz secede tiny "Bradford Province" from Vuode Province.

July: Buffone's Un-named Party forms coalition government with Schneider's SEIRP party - Buffone returns as Prime Minister. Buffone's Peculiarist-inclined government is soon mired in perpetual struggle with the King, like Schneider's government in 1989.

Royal-instigated referendum on the nature of Talossa narrowly fails to become law. In response, King Robert declares that Vuode Province is seceding from Talossa, on the grounds that if Talossa is not a real country then nothing makes secession illegal. Government responds by declaring that the King is no longer a citizen. In ensuing courtcase, Uppermost Cort rules that "Peculiarism is an invalid philosophy", convicts King of treason but imposes minor penalty for "first offence".

1993/xiv January: after elections PC forms coalition with Nick Kovac's "Minority Party" - Metáirâ returns as Prime Minister. UP boycotts the Cosâ after Metáirâ is accused of forging a citizen's vote. PC takes advantage of lack of opposition to rewrite Talossa's legal system wholesale.

October: Leftists boycott elections again. PC wins 89% of vote on miniscule turnout. The PC will win an absolute majority in every subsequent Talossan election until 2003.

1994/xv February: Metáirâ steps down as Prime Minister in favour of Gary Schwichtenberg.

May: Elections. Davron secretly take over Nick Kovac's Liberal Party, which wins 37% of the vote. PC wins bare majority, Schwichtenberg remains in office.

Madison sues Kuenn for forging Liberal Party election advertisments. Kuenn argues that the constitutional right to privacy in the mail trumps public's right to know; Cort agrees. In revenge, Madison schedules a referendum changing the constitution, but doesn't allow Davron to know about it. Referendum passes unanimously.

Schwichtenberg becomes increasingly apathetic, drops out of activity altogether; Madison and Metáirâ put John McGarry into the PM's role, but McGarry proves to be even less active.

December: PC wins absolute majority over Davron and leftist "Vacilliation" party.

1995/xvi March: King Robert I marries Min Jenny Pai, who becomes "Queen Jenny".

Talossa is once again becoming apathetic and in desperate need of "new blood". Geoff Toumayan, friend of Wes Erni, becomes citizen and is quickly browbeaten into becoming PM. Announces plan to put Talossa on the Internet.

September: PC wins massive majority in election. Davron have drifted out of activity.

October 21: Talossa officially goes online - begins advertising on Usenet.

1996/xvii January 15: Talossa's first webpage goes online.

February: First "cybercit", Chris Collins, applies. Netscape adds Talossan home page to list of "world's most interesting websites". King receives 2,000 inquiries about citizenship within one month, but only five are prepared to go through complicated immigration process.

April 10: Støtanneu moves to HTML format.

March: New cybercits found leftist "Defenders of the Land of Talossa" (ZPT) party and set up online paper, L'Avîntguard. Other new citizens form rightist Clockwork Orange Party (COP) and online paper Devotchka Gazetta.

April: COP implicated in scandal after leader Nathan Freeburg attempts to recruit Davron. PC wins absolute majority (again).

For most of year, Talossa splits into pro- and anti-Cybercit factions. Metáirâ is most prominent anti-Cyber voice; fired by pro-Cyber Toumayan from Cabinet.

Committee founded to rewrite Talossan constitution. New Australian citizen Adiêns Glaçâ becomes Secretary of State and prominent member of constitutional committee, which writes the 1997 Organic Law. The Organic Law is the basis of the Kingdom of Talossa to this day.

In November election, for the first time opposition parties raise the issue of Madison's "pocket votes" - inactive citizens whose only participation in Talossa is as PC voting fodder come election time.

1997/xviii May: New Zealander Miestrâ Schivâ applies for citizenship. Collaborates with Adiêns Glaçâ (Pengöpäts governor) on "Penguinean" (autonomous Pengöpäts) subculture. Although the King originally approves of the idea of "Talossa's equivalent of the Basques", he later decides this to be an intolerable threat to Talossan unity.

First "Wittenberg" online discussion group founded by Charles Sauls. In the years to come it will be replaced by at least ten different versions, but will remain the central forum of Talossan culture and society.

September 26: At King's behest, Uppermost Cort rejects Schivâ's application for citizenship. (The vote was actually tied, but the King declared it a rejection). Glaçâ and a small group of citizens and prospectives quit in protest and resolve to start new micronation ("First Exodus").

October 16: New micronation, "Free Commonwealth of Penguinea", founded by Exodees. In "presidential" system inspired by Oliver Cromwell and ancient Iceland in equal measure, Glaçâ becomes head of government, Schivâ head of legislature.

1998/xix January: New Talossan Prime Minister Dan Wardlow begins to negotiate with Penguinean leaders for peace treaty. Increasingly undermined by King Robert, Wardlow splits from PC to form own "Peace and Freedom Party" (PFPT). King Robert puts new citizen Chris Gruber forward as PC candidate for Prime Minister.

March: PFPT heavily defeated after Wardlow quits Talossa in mid-campaign; Gruber becomes Prime Minister. Some PFPT supporters leave Talossa.

A new opposition coalesces around Talossan Liberal Party, whose leading figures include Jay Shorten and Ián Anglatzarâ.

Surprisingly, King Robert switches to supporting Penguinean peace treaty, appoints PM Gruber as negotiator with Penguinean leadership. Sharp exchange of emails between Gruber and Schivâ. Peace treaty never ratified in Kingdom after Gruber's then-wife loses the only copy.

Erik Rothwell forms "Gothic Peculiarist party" (GWP) in Penguinea. Other notable members are Charles Sauls and Dieter Vercáriâ.

Matt Dabrowski, infamous for causing several intermicronational diplomatic incidents, applies for Talossan citizenship. Makes close ally of King Robert (who apparently sees Dabrowski as like the young Ben Madison), but is rejected by vote of joint session of Talossan parliament. Attempts to join Penguinea; rejected by Penguinean legislature. In revenge, Dabrowski (with connivance of King Robert) founds abortive "separatist" movement among Penguinean oppositionists.

1999/xx Dabrowski becomes Talossan citizen after King Robert changes immigration law to make it easier. He will later drift out of activity after the King refuses to support some of his pet projects.

September: Gruber resigns as Prime Minister of Talossa; replaced by Michael Pope.
