Where is the Republic of Talossa?
The Republic of Talossa is a small nation, both in area and in population. Our territory consists of areas of the east of the Unites States city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, together with the island of Cezembre, off the coast of Brittany.
Our North American territories can be found about 90 miles north of the Chicago Loop. Talossa lies along the shores of the Talossan Sea near the meeting points of three rivers: the Menomonee, the Kinnickinnic and the Milwaukee. It is crossed by US Interstate 43 and Interstate 94, which come together downtown at the Marquette Interchange. Our present population is made up of more than twenty adult citizens from all over the world, brought together by their love of Talossan culture and their shared rights and duties as Talossan citizens.
Talossan Life
For a sense of daily life in our Republic, visit our discussion board, Wittenberg. You can watch a free and republican Talossa being built in real-time through the work of our government and our national Parliament, and in the contributions of ordinary citizens and Friends of the Republic to our rich community life.
A useful tool for the beginner in navigating the sometimes quirky jargon of Talossan society is the Glossary, a constantly updated list of acronyms, Ladintsch phrases and bite-sized capsules of Talossan history that are essential in following the twists and turns in Wittenberg conversations. If you read something in your Talossan sojourn that you can't find in the Glossary, let us know!
History and Culture
The Republic of Talossa seceded from the original Kingdom of Talossa on 1 June 2004. The original Kingdom of Talossa still exists today and was founded as the project of one man, Robert Ben Madison, on 26 December 1979, a day still celebrated in the Republic today as Foundation Day, one of our most important public holidays. Many triumphs and crises later, including the departure of Madison from the overall Talossan scene, our Republic has become a vibrant and diverse political and cultural community where the interests of the many count, not the privileges or whims of a few. Our process of nation-building has not been an easy one. However we are slowly but surely establishing the basis of our sovereignty, and expanding the scope of our community activities.
The crowning jewel of Talossan culture is el ghleş ("the tongue"), our national language. It is a speculative derivation from the Romance language as it would have been spoken in North Africa prior to the Arab conquest in the 6th century. For more information, please visit www.learntalossan.com
Government and Politics
Talossa has a semi-presidential system of government, with a directly-elected President as head of state. The actual head of government, known as the Seneschal or prime minister, is the leader of the party or coalition that can command a majority of seats in our national parliament, the Chamber of Deputies.
For more about Talossa's system of government, please see the section on Government, or for a more detailed look at our constitution and laws, see the National Register of Laws, under the Public Records section of this website (coming soon).
